Rose Orchard was the name of the Reed family home and pear orchard in Bryte, CA . It was named for Hayward Reed's wife, Rose Mather Reed. The Sea Scouts Neptune of West Sacramento sailed their newest addition to the fleet up the Sacramento River from Sausalito on Sunday. Under the leadership of Skipper Nate Eckler, the Sea Scouts offer a youth education program that teaches young adults, ages 13-21, boating and vocational skills.

The kids helped celebrate the welcoming of 2012 on London Time which is 8 hours before California. The last two years our family and friends have gathered at the Streets of London Pub in West Sacramento to have lunch, drink a pint or two then enjoy a champagne toast at Midnight London time (4:00 PM California). The Streets of London is a family friendly establishment.

According to local opinion it has been deemed both an eyesore and a fascinating work in progress. According to Steve "spoke with the owner this weekend and he is ready to move it to the Bryte boat launch as soon as the "powers that be" allow him to move it. He is hoping to do it Saturday 1/14/12 early in the morning but that will be up to City officials. Then he and his dog plan to motor on out to the Pacific and sail to Hawaii. Living his dream...".

Be sure to look for this curious art car when you are in the neighborhood of Yoshi's Jazz Club in San Francisco. This unique art piece sports an eclectic garden of flowers and fruits on the roof and scenes of San Francisco landmarks painted on the body. "Under The Sea" on N Street

RIP Guybert "GL" Pierce

Guyburt 'GL' Pierce passed away peacefully at home with loved ones on Monday, December 12, 2011 after a valiant battle with cancer. GL was born May 24, 1947 in Sacramento, CA. GL was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his much-loved and devoted wife of 41 years, Janell, and his two children, Adam (Suzy) Pierce of Sacramento and Amy (Joshua) Costa of Alameda. 'Pappy' leaves behind his pride and joy - his five beautiful grandchildren, Ella and Jonny Pierce, Cecilia, Samuel and Miles Costa. GL is survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. After being born in Sacramento and moving briefly to Merced, GL spent the majority of his life in West Sacramento, CA. A graduate of James Marshall High School, Guyburt took a few college courses and eventually began work for the phone company. He was a proud member of the Communications Workers of America. He retired from Pacific Bell in 1993. A talented artist, GL enjoyed drawing in his young life. He was always ready with a corny joke or humorous story for a friend or stranger. GL beamed when recounting the adventures and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling to many places including Japan, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii with his 'beautiful Jan.' A car enthusiast, he enjoyed his many prized automobiles over the years including his Corvette, and completely rebuilt his 1956 Chevy truck.In accordance with his wishes, no memorial is scheduled and his ashes will be placed along the scenic California coast. The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, CA. Remembrances may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

RIP Eugene "Pops" Evenson

Born August 27, 1919 in North Dakota and a long time resident of West Sacramento Gene "Pops" Evenson passed away on October 8, 2011 at the age of 92. He met and married the love of his life Verna Jean Evenson during World War II, after a whirlwind 6 week courtship, and they were married for 62 years before her death in 2005. Gene and Verna were members of the West Sacramento Moose Lodge where we became friends 20 years ago. Gene was a master carpenter and worked many years at the California State Capitol. Gene was also a long-time volunteer at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and loved to dance the polka. He will be missed by many friends and family in West Sacramento.

EVENSON, Eugene Promoted into heaven on October 8, 2011 at age 92. He is now with his loving wife Verna after sharing 62 years of marriage. Eugene is survived by his children, Vernon (Deborah), Cindy (Jim), Hokey (Pat) and Gloria, 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Eugene was a 60 year member of Carpenters Local # 46 and a member of West Sacramento Moose Lodge # 1762. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1066 26th Street Sacramento, CA. Reception to follow at West Sacramento Moose Lodge, 3142 Jefferson Blvd. In lieu of flowers donations preferred to St. Francis Church, the West Sacramento Moose Lodge or a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to River Cities Funeral Chapel.

Born in Bakersfield, CA., Dick spent his early years, to the sixth grade, on adventurous travels with his parents as migratory workers. He attended grade school in Portland, OR, Bakersfield and Orland, CA. He graduated from Orland High School, attended Santa Barbara State College, graduated with a BA in Industrial Arts Education from Chico State, and obtained his Masters from San Francisco State College. He served with the U.S. Army in WWII and became a teacher and Assistant Principal at River City High School.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sue; sons Douglas of Roseville; Mark of Dubai, and Scott of Sacramento; granddaughters Candace, Amy, and Erin of Cameron Park; sister Margorie of Yuba City; many nieces and nephews; and many wonderful and loving close friends.
Dick has requested no service except what may be at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Orland, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Yolo Hospice.

San Pedro Association celebrated it’s 89th Festa in Bryte on Sunday, June 26. Carne Espeta BBQ was served as it has been since the first Festa in 1922. Held at historic San Pedro Park in Bryte off of N. Hobson, it’s membership draws from the original Madeiran and Portuguese decendents and families from Bryte as well as those in the greater Sacramento area.

From 9 AM this morning to 9 AM on Sunday - River City HS will be the home of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. About 40 teams will be wet up with tents and booths on the track around the football field - walking in support and memory of cancer. 24 hours of walking to show that cancer never sleeps. There will be food vendors, an American Cancer Society Store and lots of fundraisers on-site to raise money for cancer. There will also be a kids zone sponsored by the city. Visitors are welcome to come and walk during the day and visit the Relay. We hope you will check it out!

Lisa Reinertson’s bronze sculpture, "Baseball Players: Batter and Pitcher" is on display on West Capitol Avenue across from City Hall. Tom, retired Captain with Cal-Fire, is the youngest son of the late Ambrose (Andy) Bertsch who served as Fire Chief of the Washington Fire Department from about 1964 to 1978. It was such a treat to run into Willie DaPrato at the VFW Post in West Sacramento today. 15th Street Fitness is now located in the building that old timers in West Sacramento fondly remember as Willie's Market. When we were kids we would hang out at the store and pester owner "Willie" DaPrato. Willie was kind of the neighborhood guidance counselor and I think he hired many of those kids to work in his store to get them off the streets. Some folks might remember that Willie was elected to be the first mayor of West Sacramento, but the vote to incorporate our city failed..so Willie never served. It was nice to see you Willie!

Remembering Sumner William "Sam" Combs, Sr.

Sam Combs Park on Stone Boulevard in West Sacramento.
Sumner W. "Sam" Combs was born in Hastings, Nebraska in 1895 and was one of seven children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. Sam worked on the family farm in Butler County and graduated from Ulysses High School in Ulysses, Nebraska, then was drafted into the army during WW1.

Sam attended business school in Omaha and married his high school sweetheart Valdeva Maria Hastings, one of the first females to graduate from University of Nebraska. Valdeva's father was State Senator Lovell Sheldon Hastings. After the depression hit, the family lost their farm and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.

In 1936, Sam moved his wife and 3 children to San Francisco then came to West Sacramento where Sam got a job with the Hotel Senator Garage. After a stint working for the Hull Hotel Company in Fresno, Sam moved his family back to West Sacramento and ran a service station on the old El Rancho Hotel property until the property was sold and he retired.

Sam was a charter member of the Port District Kiwanis and was friends with William G. Stone, also known as the "Father of the Port, who encouraged him to run for Yolo County Supervisor. Sam went door to door meeting folks in the three communities of West Sacramento, Broderick and Bryte and was elected in 1960.

John Combs wrote about his father and the contributions he made to our community:

SUMNER WILLIAM COMBS, SR., KNOWN TO EVERYONE AS `SAM', MOVED TO WEST SACRAMENTO FROM HOLLYWOOD IN 1946. HE WAS OWNER OF THE EL RANCHO SHELL SERVICE STATION UNTIL HE RETIRED IN 1960. HE JOINED THE WEST SACRAMENTO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND WAS APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF THE CHAMBER'S FIRST COMMITTEE FOR CITY INCORPORATION. IN THIS CAPACITY HE BECAME CONVINCED THAT CITY GOVERNMENT WAS FAR MORE PREFERABLE THAN THE COUNTY SYSTEM IN PLACE THEN. CITY GOVERNMENT FOR WEST SACRAMENTO BECAME HIS PASSION AND VISION. VOTERS REJECTED THE INCORPORATION ISSUE BUT `SAM' SAW OTHER WAYS OF BETTERING HIS COMMUNITY, SO HE RAN FOR SUPERVISOR AND WAS ELECTED TO REPLACE LAWRENCE DREW. HE WAS RE—ELECTED IN 1964. DURING HIS YEARS AS SUPERVISOR, WEST SACRAMENTO BEGAN RECEIVING ITS FAIR SHARE OF MUCH NEEDED COUNTY FUNDS FOR ROAD MAINTENANCE. BY 1966 OVER 100 MILES OF ROADS AND STREETS IN THE FIRST DISTRICT WERE BUILT AND REPAIRED. THE 5th STREET UNDERPASS WAS BUILT, BRIDGING THE GAP EXISTING BETWEEN BRODERICK, BRYTE AND WEST SACRAMENTO. STREET SIGNS WERE ERECTED, THE FIRST STREET SWEEPER SERVICE WAS BEGUN, A NEW LIBRARY BRANCH WAS LOCATED IN WEST SACRAMENTO, MAJOR ROAD DEVELOPMENT WAS LAID OUT FOR HARBOR AND INDUSTRIAL BOULEVARDS, THE YOLO COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION WAS EXPANDED TO GIVE EAST YOLO TWO MEMBERS INSTEAD OF ONE. HE SECURED INCREASES IN SERVICES RENDERED BY YOLO COUNTY OFFICES, NAMELY, PROBATION, SHERIFF, AND DISTRICT ATTORNEY. A CORPORATION YARD WAS CONSTRUCTED. HE COOPERATED WITH LOCAL GROUPS TO CONSTRUCT THE BUILDING THEN KNOWN AS `THE GIRLS ACTIVITY CENTER' LOCATED IN THIS PARK HIS NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND OTHER AGENCIES HELPED PRODUCE THE AGREEMENT THAT DEEDED THE PARK'S LAND TO WEST SACRAMENTO. `SAM' DIED THE DAY AFTER HIS 71st BIRTHDAY IN JANUARY, 1966. HIS FATAL HEART ATTACK CAME IN THE WOODLAND BOARD OF SUPERVISORS CHAMBERS JUST AFTER HE PRESIDED OVER THE LOCAL COUNTY AGENCY FORMATION (LAFCO) COMMITTEE. SOON AFTER HIS BURIAL IN WOODLAND CEMETERY, THE YOLO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTED TO NAME THIS PARK IN HIS MEMORY. HE PARTICIPATED IN MANY ORGANIZATIONS AS DISPLAYED ON THE BRONZE PLAQUE DEDICATED IN HIS HONOR TODAY, MAY 23, 2002. THE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE TILE ON THE WALL ARE MOST APPROPRIATE SINCE HE FOUGHT IN EVERY MAJOR BATTLE IN WORLD WAR I. `SAW' WAS A TRUE PATRIOT. ~John Combs, March 2008.

This corn husk angel hangs among several on my holiday tree. The “Noche de Rábano” or Night of the Radishes is a traditional Oaxaca city tradition. To decorate the tables, indigenous servants of the monks would carve radishes and adorn them with flowers and corn husks.

Kiwanis' See's Candy Shack Robbed

The Kiwanis' See's Candy Shack was burglarized Wednesday night. The thieves broke into the back of the store and got away with all the stock. The Kiwanis Club of West Sacramento works so hard every year to raise money for their annual Kid's Kamp so we hope they find the culprits and throw them in the tank. Maybe a suitable punishment would be to make them eat all the candy in one sitting!

Dog Gone Alley and controversial art in Woodland

We took a walk down Dog Gone Alley in Woodland last week after having lunch in the area. The Woodland City Council renamed the alley in 2005 in the hope the whimsical name would help attract tourists and add to the flavor of the downtown historic district.
