One ton of grapes = ± 700 bottles of wine
We visited the vineyards of a friend in Fiddletown this week to watch the picking and crush of their grapes. 12 farm laborers arrived in the early morning and proceeded to hand pick almost 17 tons of grapes in less than 4 hours then were off to the next vineyard for their afternoon shift. When we stopped to taste wine later that day I had a completely new appreciation for the blood, sweat and tears that goes into the production of my favorite Zinfandel!

The Playagon from West Sacramento
This Plyagon is probably returning from a stint giving away Otter Pops at Burning Man 2010 held on the Playa at Black Rock City, NV. I found this website that describes the evolution of the Playagon...and according to a West Sacramento reader, the Playagon was designed/built and lives year round in West Sacramento!

Pinktober® :Pink Promise USA 2006
We visited Butchart Gardens last month and since it was late in the year there were only a few roses still clinging to life. We ambled through the garden looking at all the names of the varieties and happened upon this solo blooming rose......the beautiful Pink Promise!
The National Breast Cancer Foundation selected this rose to officially represent a continual blooming promise of compassion and awareness. For every Pink Promise plant purchased, a percentage of the sales is donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The Pink Promise Rose was hybridized by Jim Coiner and introduced by Coiner Nursery of Lavern, Calif.

West Capitol Ave--a bird's eye view
Thanks Matt Hargrove for sharing this great shot of the view overlooking West Capitol Avenue from the new West Sacramento Community Center. A few things to get excited about..our new Center has Community gathering rooms, classrooms, a senior lounge, a room for a historical display, a theater, child care/pre-school, space for events, outdoor space upstairs as well as downstairs; it will serve as part of the transit center and ties in with the community college, county library, and City Hall. West Sacramento...be proud!!!

Kings Banner on CalSTRS Building
Thanks Tamara Carr for sharing this great photo of the Sacramento Kings banner hanging from the CalSTRS building in West Sacramento. "Here We Rise" is a tribute to the Kings and the Sacramento Kings community coming together. The massive banner is lit by solar-powered lights so it can be viewed at night.
