It is hard to believe that construction on Raley Field began 10 years ago today. The plaque below designates the location of the State Box Company. Many West Sacramento old timers will always remember the smell of the Presto Logs as they were being manufactured in their plant.

Stay tuned...coming soon. The sign says we are getting a Blue Blizz Yogurt Shop on West Capitol Avenue. This should be a nice addition to the heart of our community...see the West Capitol Avenue Streetscape Master Plan.

Blockbuster expects to close between 810 and 960 of its U.S. stores through 2010 and the store on West Capitol Avenue is on the list. Not good news for local employees who will soon be out of work. Last Thursday's Business Journal reported that California has lost 732,700 jobs in the past year.

These paintings of Harold and Virginia Turner are on display in the foyer of our new library that opened on October 10, 2009. This library is fantastic. I walked through and took several photos shown in the slide show below:

Dubbed by some as the "informal mayor" of West Sacramento, Gary Reason is the Commander of the West Sacramento VFW Post 8762 . If you know a Veteran that needs a helping hand or a call just let Gary know and he'll find the appropriate resources. You can find Gary most mornings at his "informal office" table in Carols Restaurant on West Capitol Avenue.

Thank you Brad Abbott for sharing his photo taken at the 2009 Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. “I was able to attend the induction ceremony of Rickey Henderson, which has been a dream of mine for the past 20 years. ESPN is currently running a photo contest, and I entered this shot that I took of inductees Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice.”

Downed trees, branches and even a street light in our neighborhood. News reports said several folks in West Sacramento had trees hit their houses in this first storm of the season.....lucky for the folks on this corner, the street light fell away from their house!

Folks along the Sacramento River got a treat as the Nina replica sailed up-river to dock in Old Sacramento last year. "The Niña was by far Columbus' favorite".
The Niña is a replica of the ship on which Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on his three voyages of discovery to the new world beginning in 1492. Columbus sailed the tiny ship over 25,000 miles. That ship was last heard of in 1501, but the new Niña has a different mission. We are a floating museum, and we visit ports all over the United States."

"Presented by the CCPOA, this three-day event from Oct. 2-4 featured six rib teams, an Interactive Kids Zone and live musical acts. Participants enjoyed the taste of ribs by Joshua’s Ribs, Smokehouse Specialties, West Sacramento Elk’s Lodge, Addicted to Rub, River Cat Ribs, and My Brother’s BBQ." Our family sampled several of the BBQ booths and we think the West Sacramento Elks' were the best!

The Westmore Oaks Parent Teachers Association had a spectacular turnout for their fundraising event held at the Sacramento Grand Ballroom last Friday evening. The high point of the evening was when Pete Rossi owner of Vince's Italian Ristorante performed several operatic songs! The success of this event was made possible by the generous donations of wines, food and services by many local businesses and the West Sacramento Educational Foundation.
