Indian Summer -Just enjoying the great weather!

Stephanie and I enjoyed appetizers and beverages on Ernestos patio. The weather has been so great--hard to believe it is almost October!

Meet Me In The Indian Summer (Van Morrison)
Won't you meet me
In the Indian summer
Well before
Those chilly winds do blow
Won't you meet me
In the Indian summer
Take me way back
To what I know

Oh won't you meet me
In the Indian summer
We'll go walking
By the weeping willow tree
Oh won't you meet me
In the Indian summer

Visiting Canada Geese on Fowler Road

Thank you to Joan Barber of West Sacramento for sharing this photo of the visiting Canada Geese out for a stroll on Fowler Road in the Bridgeway Island area. We have seen a lot of these visitors recently at our duck pond on Linden Avenue.

Trivia: "Canada geese are known for their seasonal migrations. Most Canada geese have staging or resting areas where they join up with others. Their autumn migration can be seen from September to the beginning of November. Adult geese are often seen leading their goslings in a line, usually with one parent at the front, and the other at the back."

In the Company of Crows

Bryan Miller shot this photo of a crow helping a neighbor clean his car mats. Bryan said "this crow insists on being within feet of me while I'm doing yard work---literally on my lawnmower at one point."

According to researchers, the bold behavior of these pesky crows is not unusual and it is most likely being fostered by a human in the neighborhood who is feeding them. For more information on the evolution of crow - human interactions see this publication: In the Company of Crows and Ravens

Goodbye Hollywood Hardware West

Hollywood Hardware West has closed their store on Merkley Avenue. For many years they were the only hardware store in the West Sacramento area. Over the years it was always a regular stop for our family whether we needed 1 screw, a gallon of paint, a 2 x 4, or the screen door repaired. I really could spend hours there just looking..... We will miss you Denny & Jerry and thank you for 40 years of service to our community!

Remembering September 11th- Fostering World Peace

Thanks to Terri Tanner for sharing this picture from her recent trip to New York City. The now damaged Sphere, created in 1971 by artist Fritz Koenig, once stood in the fountain of the World Trade Center plaza now stands in Battery Park.

More from the Battery Park Website:"In Battery Park, a now-damaged sculpture called The Sphere, which stood in the fountain of the World Trade Center plaza, forms a memorial. Sphere has been stored by the Port Authority in a hangar at Kennedy Airport since the piece was pulled from underneath the collapsed towers. It was one of two public artworks found in the debris. The memorial was inaugurated at a ceremony marking six months since the attack. "Created in 1971 by artist Fritz Koenig, The Sphere was described as "a monument fostering world peace." The 45,000-pound sculpture is 15 feet in diameter and is made of steel and bronze. It sustained a gash through its center, but remains structurally intact."

West Sacramento BrownieTroop No 449 - circa 1963.

Eve Westvik sent this photo of her West Sacramento Brownie Troop #449 planting a tree at the new Activity Center that was being built in then to be named Sam Combs Park on Stone Boulevard in West Sacramento.

Eve said "I can't place the date, maybe 1963 or 1964. They aren't calling it Sam Combs park in the article, but I don't know if that's because they just left it out, or didn't have an official name for it yet, or it wasn't named that until after he died in 1966. I know he (Sam Coombs) was instrumental in making that land available for use as a park, and I know we were meeting in that building as of 1966 because I distinctly remember Mrs. Shumaker and another leader talking about Ronald Reagan running for governor in 1966." In this photo: Lisa Watson, Joan Russell, Cindy Vondette, Darlene Nichols, Barbara Allen, Phyllis Martin, Lynn Martin, Carol Benjamin, Cindy Mallen, Sharon Brown, Toni Flores, Karen Barr, Mrs. Erma Snyder, Eve Westvik, Miss Cherille Linch, Denise Granger, Mrs. Dolores Shumaker, Sharon Shumaker, Patty Russell, Robin Rugue and Mrs. Stella Nichols.

"Topping Off" Ceremony at the new West Sacramento Community Center: Signing the final beam

The community was invited to come by and “sign” the final beam used to top off the framing of the new West Sacramento Community Center. Members of the City Council and Supervisor McGowan signed the beam first, then community members were invited to sign; the structural crew on top had the final signing after the beam was swung into place!

The new Community Center on West Capitol Avenue is right next to the college, library, and transit center also under construction.

Wikipedia Trivia: "In building construction, topping out, or topping off, is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building.
