Horse Cow Gallery Update

Update July 18, 2009. The City of West Sacramento has closed down the Horse Cow Gallery for code violations...they are now in the process of moving to a new location in the Sacramento area. I'm sad to see this unique collective of people and things leave West Sacramento!

It would be interesting to know what code they broke. It looks like a nice enough place to me.

TOTAL shame. I watched a film premiere out there last year. It is/was such a neat place, with huge sculptures & interesting folks.

Just to be clear, the code violations were for the land owner, who refused to make required upgrades/repairs to electrical and septic issues. The cooperative artists at Horse Cow were not in violation. I would have loved to see another land owner in West Sacramento offer them a reasonable place to make/share their creations. But I fear we may have lost them to the East side of the river...

For the record; the code violations were not against the land owners, but rather the Horsecow owners themselves. The land where Horsecow did their art, was a unique, inspiring and healing space, of which Horsecow were found to poor stewards. Fire erupted in April and investigators found Horsecow to be using the property in violation of local zoning & use ordinences, [i.e. public venue, theater, etc.], leading to public health and safety risks, and in violation of their lease. Their spectaular displays of fire, sound, water and light bacame a nuisance to the homeowners across the river along the quiet stretch of the Garden Hwy. Police responded frequently to their Burning Man inspired 'events'. The city of West Sacramento, worked patiently with Horsecow for nearly a year to clean-up their act, but Horsecow refused to comply, and rather continued to disregard the City and the law. Horsecow was eventually deemed to be a public nuisance by the City of West Sacramento, and were eventually evicted. In this case, the Sacramento Bee reporter found Horsecow was not a victim, but rather were scofflaw tenants whom unfortunately brought their troubles onto themselves. It was a sad period for that beautiful space, and the owners are said to be giving the land time to heal and seem to be regretful they'd trusted Horsecow with its care.
