Blockbuster Video Closing on West Capitol Avenue

Blockbuster expects to close between 810 and 960 of its U.S. stores through 2010 and the store on West Capitol Avenue is on the list. Not good news for local employees who will soon be out of work. Last Thursday's Business Journal reported that California has lost 732,700 jobs in the past year.

Was thinking about DVD rental stores yesterday. You can download (rent/buy) movies/TV shows on your TV or Playstations, etc., don't have to leave the house. Another business bites the dust.

Well, there is still the one in the Southport Town Center.

This is sad... I am still not even over the closing of Kinney's Shoe Store, and now I am supposed to deal with this!!!

It's a business model that just doesn't work anymore and they didn't move fast enough to capture the market share Netflix lured away. How far Blockbuster has fallen. It was huge.

I remember this as a Safeway store before it was Kinney's Shoe Store. When the building over to the right was built, Safeway moved to the left of the two large spaces and Thrifty moved into the right. Or was it maybe even a Payless Drugs before Thrifty? Can't remember that. But I do remember getting ice cream cones at Thrifty. They were unique because the scoops were like cylinders, not balls, so they stacked well. Cones were five cents a scoop, and lots of flavors. And of course, now Safeway has moved into the newer building in the back. How long before they move again? And does anyone remember the old Farmer's Market store (where Raley's is now) and the even older Purity Store (where Walgreen's is now)?

Another friend and I used to be able to buy a package of cancelled international stamps at Thrifty and we'd collect them, trade them, put them into pre-printed books and look up the countries and learn about them. Kids today seem to barely know any geography.

I heard the reason they were closing this one was because they had one in southport, annoying!
