Our Robins' Nest
While pruning our mulberry tree last weekend the guys rescued this robins' nest. They know I'm kind of sentimental about our yard friends, so Kurt trimmed the limbs around the nest and brought it to me. I know she doesn't come back to reuse her nest but I'll keep it in case she or her peeps want to stop by and visit now and then.
Trivia: Only 40 percent of American robins’ nests successfully produce young, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Females build the nest from the inside out, pressing dead grass and twigs into a cup shape using the wrist of one wing. Other materials include paper, feathers, rootlets, or moss in addition to grass and twigs. Once the cup is formed, she reinforces the nest using soft mud gathered from worm castings to make a heavy, sturdy nest. She then lines the nest with fine dry grass. The finished nest is 6-8 inches across and 3-6 inches high.

Casa Mobile Park-a living history
The circular shaped building that now functions as the Casa Mobile clubhouse and park office was once part of the old Capitol Sky Park airport. Jo, the park manager, gave me a tour of the old terminal building and said they have many photos dating back to the 1950's when the airport was still in use.

Champion Basketball Team 1912-13
Debbie and Christy Norton's great uncle Almer Norton is in the back row, 2nd from the left. Almer's Sacramento High basketball team were the league champions in 1912-13. The Norton kids (Bill, Ray, Frank, Almer, and Doris) all grew up in the old Broderick neighborhood. Since there was no high school in the town of Washington students chose to attend either Sacramento High or Woodland High. Many chose Sac High because it was easier to walk to school

Pink Roller Skates
When I was a kid, spring time always meant time for digging out my roller skates. You remember the old fashioned kind that fit over your shoes and had to be adjusted with a skate key that we would wear on a string around our neck. Just when we would get up a head-of-steam my skate would come loose and fall off my shoe and I would tumble face first into the street. In the old days, West Sacramento didn't have any parks and the only playgrounds were at the schools, so we would skate over to the high school and race on the tennis courts.
