The Greening of Poquito Park: "Alice's Memorial Garden"

Poquito Park has been adopted by her neighbor. Valencia has been removing the weeds and raking the gravel for some time and now has planted a lovely garden in memory of her grandmother. Valencia says "...Memorial Garden is dedicated to my late Grandmother Alice Docker who died last August 3, 2009. Some cactus plants were her's from Santa Barbara. All the rocks were donated by my friend Janet that lives only 2 houses away, she also donated some cactus. My best friend Marsha, donated a lot of the plants too. I hope people in the neighborhood will enjoy the park now, and maybe leave a plant in someone's memory and I will plant it. Maybe someone else will enjoying making our park look better and start planting plants on the other side too."

What a great idea Valencia and a beautiful way to use wasted space that otherwise is an eyesore! Your grandmother would have approved. Judy Clark

We have been admiring your garden and it makes it even more special to know that it is a memorial to your grandmother. It is a wonderful idea. We will try to find some sort of plant to add as a memorial to my parents who have been gone for many years, but whose loving memory is with me every day.

Nice job Valencia! Maybe George at Parks and Rec will get a bench in the park now. It is certainly worthy of one since you've scrubbed it up for it's glorious debut. It would be a beautiful place to rest on a nice evening walk in our neighborhood.

What a beautiful landscaping job! Now all that's needed are a few benches where people can rest while enjoying the peaceful tranquility of the park. I hope the city appreciates your efforts enough that they will see to it that a bench is placed in the park.
Great job Valencia!

What a wonderful tribute to our fabulous grandma. I'm sure she's very happy looking down on her garden. Wouldn't it be great to have a bench so we can all sit and remember all of our memories of such a great woman! Thanks Valencia.

No one loved gardening more than Alice and your uncle Wayne. Hope you are able to make a beautiful spot in her memory. Gardens are a gift from God.

Nice gesture Valencia! Very impressed with how you have taken a community eyesore and developed a beautiful public garden for all to enjoy. As you know, one of grandma's favorite past times was gardening and taking care of her plants and flowers. The blooming flowers and cactus is a reminder of how grandma brought sunshine to everyone's lives and how her prickly personality is so deeply missed. A Big thanks to the City of West Sacramento for enabling Valencia and her friends to honor a grandmother who gave so much. Hopefully, we can raise some funds to build a bench or two so that people can sit and enjoy the public garden and inspire others.

I love watching our new park with growth after so many years of neglect. If everybody spent 1/2 a day in any park once a month, imagine how it would look....get your shovels people, bring plants and we can all get to know each other, doesn't matter what park you volunteer in, they all need a lot of TLC!! I can't imagine a more appropriate tribute to Alice than the creation of a beautiful, living environment in which to relax and take in the simple pleasures of nature. The result of your efforts, Valencia, goes far beyong a memorial to your grandmother. It is a selfless gift to the community, an inspiration to others, and a reminder to sit still, listen attentively, breath deeply, observe details, and be present in every moment. Thank you!
