Last weekend I used my new telephoto lens to catch these busy bees as they worked to collect the sweet offerings from my potato vine flowers.

The Denny's Landmark Sign--Now Gone
The sign for Denny's and Subway on Lake Washington Boulevard is now gone...West Sacramento's sign ordinance takes effect May 1, 2008, so I guess this one was removed because of it exceeds the height restrictions.

Marty Marston does his Saturday chores
Drive by my brother Marty's house on Saturday afternoon you'll find him out doing his yard work from his chair...He is amazing! But be prepared, if you stop your car to say "Hi" you are bound to be there shooting the breeze for at least an hour talking about the old days in West Sacramento!

"Cheers" on West Capitol Avenue
Cheers on West Capitol Avenue. What a great sign-! Update: This sign is now gone
due to the new sign ordinance in West Sacramento...
Years ago we would all go to Cheers to throw darts some Saturday nights..Bonnie won the Cheers chili cookoff one year...but our old crowd is pretty much retired from the nightlife on West Capitol Avenue now....(Those were the days! Mary Hopkin 1968)

"Beauty in Progress" Landscape Award
In 1994, the City of West Sacramento awarded Harold and Virgina Turner the 2nd annual "Beauty in Progress" award for residential landscape design. Their house offers such a wonderful ambiance when you drive by that it made me want to rush home and start doing some gardening...I've heard that later in the spring their pink dogwoods will be in full bloom. The mail carrier told me it is her favorite house on her route!

April 15th at the Post Office
If was pretty crazy at the West Sacramento Post Office this afternoon. Between the demonstrators handing out pamphlets protesting the payment of taxes, the local news broadcasters and their vehicles and the West Sacramento Police gearing up to control the traffic line of folks who waited until the last minute to drop off their tax returns it was quite a scene.

Center Court's Limobus featuring CWebb
Chris Webber's exclusive Limobus on its way to the Center Court Restaurant. Rumor has it that Chris is retiring from Basketball after dealing with nagging knee injuries. So we hope to see more of him in Sacramento again since he owns such a great restaurant in the Natomas area.

April 6 was California Poppy Day
West Sacramento is enjoying the California Golden Poppies in bloom this year in the landscaping along Jefferson Boulevard. The poppy was selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890 and April 6th of each year is designated "California Poppy Day".
Trivia: California poppy leaves were used medicinally by Native Americans, and the pollen was used cosmetically. The seeds are used in cooking. Extract from the California poppy acts as a mild sedative when smoked.

Railroad Tressel on Gregory Road and South River Road
When the kids were little it was always fun to drive out Gregory Road under the old tressel to South River Road and see the wild peacocks. It is still such a beautiful and scenic drive, but I haven't seen the peacocks for years. This photo by Debbie.
