Culinary Arts and Farm to Fork Education (CAFFE) in West Sacramento

The Beginning and Advanced Culinary Classes served brunch today at the Bryte Garden Cafe.  The presentation was beautiful, the service was excellent and the food was delicious.  It was great to meet the students and the folks who supervise this career training program for Washington Unified School District: Cheryle Sutton Culinary Instructor, Renee Collins Director of College and Career Readiness and Andy Parsons Assistant Superintendent Educational Services. River City High School Students, Teachers and Staff are HAPPY for a SPRING BREAK.

Jean Brown honored for 50 Years of teaching.

Parents, students (past and present) friends and family gathered at the VFW in West Sacramento last night to celebrate Jean Brown's 50 years of teaching. A proclamation from Mayor Cabaldon honoring Jean's contribution to the teaching community was read and presented by Councilman Wes Beers.(There was not a dry eye in the house.) Many thanks to Erin Hinton, fellow teacher at the James Marshall Parent Participation Nursery School and the Preschool Board and parents for their hard work in organizing the event.

James Marshall Preschool Trike-a-thon

The Nugget Market parking lot was the location for the James Marshall Preschool Trike-a-thon. Students rode bikes, scooters and big wheels for the School's annual fund-raising event.

Goodbye to an old friend-Karen Wilkerson Laughlin

Karen Lyn LAUGHLIN, Sept. 21, 1946 - March 30, 2010
James Marshall High School Class of 1964
Following a fearless, two-year-long battle with cancer, Karen took her final breath in her own home, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Pat Laughlin, son, Andy Laughlin, daughter, Lynne Laughlin-Blee, (Todd) and his children, step son Kreg Laughlin (Idalia) and his children, brother, Jerry Wilkerson (Sue), niece, Keri Davidson (Ben) and her children, nephew, John Wilkerson (Cindy) and his children, uncles John (Ethel) and Thomas Wilkerson, aunts, Libby Burnell and Nell Trundle, cousin, Pat Saye, and countless friends, students and former coworkers. In addition to her main caregiver, her daughter, Lynne, Karen was lovingly assisted by Andy's fiancee', Alexas, and her daughters. Her parents, Mari and Fred Wilkerson, preceded her in death. A 1964 graduate of James Marshall High School, Karen spent most of her life in the community of West Sacramento, achieving several teaching credentials from CSU Sacramento and retiring after a 37-year career as a classroom teacher, special education teacher and reading specialist with the Washington Unified School District. Additionally, Karen was a 33-year member of the East Yolo Fellowship. She enjoyed frequent family escapes to the coast and adored the beaches at Santa Cruz. Karen imparted great wisdom and love on the lives of all she came to know and will be remembered for her ''teacher voice,'' warm heart and quick wit, which she held through her final days. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at River Cities Funeral Chapel, 910 Soule St., in West Sacramento, with reception to follow. A viewing will be held from 3-8 p.m. Monday. All are welcome to attend.

Remembering Alma Soost

SOOST, Alma
Born on November 20, 1916, in Broderick, Calif. Passed away on December 8, 2009, surrounded by her loving family after a heroic battle with congested heart failure. Alma is survived by her daughters Carla (Andy) Marquez and Toni Johnson; her grandsons Vincent and Stephen Marquez, and Jason and Tony (Holly) Bracy; her great grandchildren Jasyona, Jason Jr., and Jeeno Bracy; and several nieces and nephews. Alma was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, LeRoy ''Bud'' Soost and her parents Angelo and Maria Bernabovi. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Louis Bernabovi, Leo Bernabovi, and Mautilio ''Curly'' Bernabovi, and her sisters Lena Bernabovi, Alba Bernabovi, Nancy DeRiso, Hazel Salcedo, and Isabelle Portale. Alma was employed by the Washington Unified School District for 40 years as a teacher and principal. She was active in Soroptimist Interntional of West Sacramento, ICF Branch 282, East Yolo Friends of the Library, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Golden Years, and the West Sacramento Historical Society. She enjoyed her sewing club, playing bridge, poker, pinochle, and bingo, and was an avid reader. Memorials preferred to Soroptimist International of West Sacramento, East Yolo Friends of the Library, or the West Sacramento Historical Society. Visitation hours will be Sunday, December 13, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. vigil service, all at RIVER CITIES FUNERAL CHAPEL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, December 14, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church, 911 Park Blvd., West Sacramento. Entombment, St. Mary's Cemetery. Heritage Peak Charter School, West Sacramento

Heritage Peak Charter School, is a non-profit independent study charter school for students in grades Kindergarten through High School, that focuses on disenfranchised students allowing them an avenue to excel academically and socially. West Sac Early College Prep Moves to New Campus

West Sac Prep started with sixth- and seventh-graders and has been adding grades year by year. Its first class of ninth-graders started Monday. There are now about 200 students. Class sizes are small, with about 20 students each.

Future Class of 2021!

These first graders in Mrs. Burton's class at Westmore Oaks School celebrated their last day of class. The future of California, the United States, and the World will be in their hands.

ATA West Sacramento Black Belt Academy

ATA Blackbelt Academy of West Sacramento had their Tae Kwon Do testing last night and Vincent Villegas was awarded his Black Belt. ATA Tae Kwon Do currently has 85 male and female students registered for their martial arts programs and will be moving into the new Jefferson Boulevard Center later this month.

New Sacramento City College Center in West Sacramento

The building under construction across the street from West Sacramento's City Hall (at the corner of West Capitol and Merkley Ave.) will be the new home for the West Sacramento Center Los Rios Community College District Branch.

UC Davis: Equine Athletic Performance Laboratory

The Claire Giannini Hoffman Equine Athletic Performance Laboratory (EAPL) at UC Davis, completed in 2005, includes an equine exercise clinic with a treadmill for Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) patient examinations.

Trivia: Claire Giannini Hoffman was the first woman to serve on the boards of Bank of America and Sears, Roebuck & Company. In 1949 Mrs. Hoffman became a director of the Bank of America, succeeding her father, A.P. Giannini (Amadeo Giannini). A.P. Giannini was the founder of the Bank of Italy, later renamed Bank of America, and of the Banca d'America e d'Italia in San Francisco, in 1904. The bank was established to serve working class citizens of the area, especially Italians living in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. The bank survived the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 and was one of the first to offer loans to businesses to help rebuild the city.

Phil Tulga: " Music Through the Curriculum"

The Westmore Oaks PTA sponsored a workshop by Phil Tulga-a member of the Jazz Studies faculty at CSUS.

During the "Math Science and Sound"workshop, students (and their parents) learned about the science of sound, made several musical instruments, then played them together in an exciting orchestral production. See this YouTube video for a highlight of the event.
