Theme Day: Favorite Photo of the Year

I am amazed at how many visitors arrive at our blog each day to see these photos of Barbie and her friends. We have even received emails asking if these dolls are for sale. So, although these might not be "my" favorite" photos.....they are truly the most popular on this blog.

October 2008 Theme Day: Lines

Debbie shot this photo of "shoefiti" (shoes slung over a power line)! Some call shoe-slinging folk art..others will tell you it has to do with the human need for self expression.

The Urban Dictionary defines "shoefiti" as "the artistic expression of slinging shoes tied together by their laces over power lines. Generally photographs are taken of the shoefito for distribution among fellow "artists" as well as the general public."

Theme Day: Our Sister City, Alaminos, Republic of the Philippines.

Jemima Hall provided the above photos that were taken during her trip to visit Alaminos, and the 100 Islands National Park.~ Barbara


On January 15th, 2003, the West Sacramento City Council adopted Resolution 03-2 establishing a Sister City relationship with the city of Alaminos, Republic of the Philippines. This was done in response to the City Council of Alaminos Resolution No. 2002-130, which initiated a request for such a relationship. The relationship was formalized with the signing of a Sister City Agreement which was hand-delivered by West Sacramento City Council Member Mark Montemayor during his trip to the Philippines during late January 2003. One of the elements of the Agreement was to link web pages to inform the citizenry about each other's city.

August 1st Theme Day "Metal": Skygate by Roger Barr

Skygate by artist Roger Barr: This abstract sculpture near Pier 39 in San Francisco is dedicated to the memory of Eric Hoffer (1903-1983) Longshoreman-Poet-Philosopher. Eric Hoffer has been a legend and an inspiration to many of the workers who are with the Local #17 Longshoreman Union at the Port of Sacramento.

Trivia: Many of these fellows had children that I grew up with in West Sacramento..In fact I am married to Earl Bartley's son Thomas.

Notice there are 48 Stars on the flag in this photo, yet Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959. The caption on the photo is clearly marked that is was shot in 1961 to honor the gentlemen with 15 year pins. I'm almost certain this patriotic organization would not have used an obsolete flag? Or is the date on the photo wrong...who can solve this mystery?

CDPB Theme Day: Graffiti / Street Art!

City Daily Photo Bloggers Theme for March 1st is Graffiti /Street Art.

My favorite example of street art in West Sacramento is now extinct. It was by aerosol artist Anthony Padilla and was posted previously on this blog - to see post follow this link. Another great street mural project was the "Best of Broderick" Community Mural.

Happy New Year Featuring Best Photo of The Year

My favorite photo this year was the "Pink Perfection" camellia that I posted on November 9, 2007. The photo was posted just as it was shot by my Canon Powershot SD750 on November 5th, 2007 at 4:26 PM. There were no enhancements by any graphics software program except to reduce the image size for posting. Barbara Smith

CDPB Theme Day December 1st: "Bridges": The Tower Bridge

The above photo of the Tower Bridge was taken while it was closed for construction of the expanded pedestrian walkway. Below is an evening shot after the bridge was reopened. The Tower Bridge was built in 1934 is on the list of Historical Sites and Buildings in West Sacramento.

"The original M Street Bridge (Tower Bridge) was built by the Sacramento Northern Electric Railroad in 1911 and linked the cities of Washington (West Sacramento) and Sacramento. It carried electric railcars (similar to the present Light-rail) loaded with passengers and freight." See the Tower Bridge History for more information.
