A closeup shot of our wonderful old I Street Bridge...The 3,150 ton swing span is the heaviest in the United States and was the heaviest in the world when the bridge was built in 1911. The upper deck of the bridge carries automobiles and the lower deck carries trains.

The Cable Crossing Sign

Photo is of the sign at the edge of the River Walk Park designating the location of the Pacific Telephone Co. Cable Crossing in the Sacramento River. This sign has been there for years...I don't know the history, but Pacific Telephone is no more.

Patio Dining at The Club Pheasant

This photo of the Club Pheasant patio dining area was taken in the early AM before they were open for business--

Our family loves meeting at "the club" and many special occasions have been celebrated there over the years including weddings, reunions, birthdays, anniversaries and funerals! The patio is a great addition and we have a special memory there as it was the night of our planning to travel to Guatemala to meet our special girl!

Oak Tree in the Road

This beautiful old oak tree at Lisbon and Todhunter is a north side landmark.
At one time the street dead-ended at the tree...and now the City has created a nice
"island mini-park" that enables thru-traffic.

The Tower Bridge Raised for Boat Traffic

This is a shot of the Tower Bridge being raised for a boat traffic on the Sacramento River. You can see the extended bridge platform where the new wider pedestrian lanes were added recently. ~ Debbie

The I Street Bridge Built in 1911

The Historic I Street Bridge is a swing bridge crossing the Sacramento River connecting West Sacramento with Sacramento. I posted the above black and white version because the day I shot the photo, the sky and river basically looked the same color. It seems much more interesting to me now and has the look of an old photo. Below is another version of the I Street Bridge shot the same day posted in color.

On the lower level there are railroad tracks and the upper level is for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Built in 1911, this historic bridge has a vertical clearance of 14 feet 8 inches and was originally part of State Route 16 (California) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.See The History of the I Street Bridge written by Frank Norton.

CDPB Theme Day December 1st: "Bridges": The Tower Bridge

The above photo of the Tower Bridge was taken while it was closed for construction of the expanded pedestrian walkway. Below is an evening shot after the bridge was reopened. The Tower Bridge was built in 1934 is on the list of Historical Sites and Buildings in West Sacramento.

"The original M Street Bridge (Tower Bridge) was built by the Sacramento Northern Electric Railroad in 1911 and linked the cities of Washington (West Sacramento) and Sacramento. It carried electric railcars (similar to the present Light-rail) loaded with passengers and freight." See the Tower Bridge History for more information.

The Capitol Bowl "aka" El Rancho Bowl

Above Photo by Tom Spalding

These are just some of my memories of the old days at the El Rancho Bowling Alley..The El Rancho Bowl at 900 West Capitol Avenue was one of West Sacramento's best hangouts in the 1960's and 70's. It was home to the Nisei Leagues and the manager was Toko Fuji, the head mechanic was Shig Imura, Joe Bonomo ran the kitchen, Leroy Klink tended the bar in the 300 Room, Virgil Yee was at the front desk, my mom Shirley was the league coordinator and my sister Kathye and I worked in the Kiddie Corral.

I remember watching my stepdad Ralph Marston and Joe Sheldon "pot bowl" all night long and seeing many 300 games during that time. My stepbrother Charlie and his buddies all bowled on the traveling team and their team was always the league champs.

We used to go Blue Chip Stamp bowling on Saturday nights and sometimes would fill 10 books in one night...My sister in law Bev bowled one of her all time highest games in our couples league the night before her first daughter Shelley was born. My brother Howard remembers taking a quarter and playing the pinball machine and building it up to 18 games then selling the games to one of the porters on duty.

More recently, our daughter's put on a 50's style "Family Bowlarama" there about 7 years ago that was attended by about 35 members of our extended family and it was very memorable for all. In 2006, my grandson Jack had his 4th birthday party at the Capitol Bowl....

The Bryte Post Office

The Bryte Post Office on Lisbon Avenue was established in 1915. The town of Bryte was named after Mike Bryte, a well-known dairy farmer in the area. Photo by Barbara

In the 1980s I was friends with Pearl Reese Loutensock, retired Postmaster with the Bryte Post Office. She was a very colorful local personality who was active in the Soroptimist Club of West Sacramento.

Whitey's Jolly Kone

Whitey's Jolly Kone: A long time favorite of West Sacramento old-timers who remember"Whitey Boisclair" behind the fountain. When the girls played Bobby Sox baseball, Whitey treated the winning teams to ice cream. In the end everybody met at Whitey's after the games so the loosing team could get a treat too! Photo by Barbara Smith

Above photo, Hal and Jack wait for their favorite -- a corn dog and milk shake
from Whitey's!
