The mantis was sunning himself on the wall next to our Starbucks drive-thru window. He obviously was enjoying the long shadow he was casting, because they said he had been there for several hours!

Heirloom Tomatoes
Delicious heirloom tomatoes are thriving in Kurt and Christy's organic garden.
Christy is a master at creating fresh salsa, bruschetta and pasta sauce using the fresh herbs and vegetables from their bounty. Since the arrival of our grandchildren, our family has fashioned a tradition of gathering at our house for Sunday supper most weeks...and enjoying the fresh garden vegetables that are in season is wonderful.

Rudy's Hide Away
Rudy's Hideaway off Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova has been serving the Sacramento area for 35 years. I remember having a 16 ounce lobster tail there that was pretty good and cheap. --I've heard they have remodeled and updated the place recently; we haven't been there in a few years, but I think the graphics on their truck reflect the old Rudy's image! ~ Barbara
Trivia from Florene in West Sacramento: The original owner of Rudy's was a neighbor of mine in Rosemont, back in the early 70s. And Rudy's was one of Aerojet employees' favorite watering holes and dining spots back then.

New Barber Shop on 15th Street
A new Barber Shop is now open in the old West Sacramento Cleaners Building on Fifteenth Street. Photo by Debbie
According to a West Sacramento Historical Society publication, the West Sacramento Cleaners Building on the corner of Fifteenth Street and Virgina Avenue was built in 1946 by Hubert and Grace Beers. Mrs. Beers sold the building in 1971. At one time there was also a restaurant on one side of the building.
Over the years it has housed Sam Young Studios, Blanche's Flowers and Gifts and several other types of business residences. View a photo of this building last March.~ Barbara

Bryte Community Garden
Community gardens transform empty lots into green, living spaces. They are collaborative projects created by members of the community; residents share in both the maintenance and rewards of the garden. There are an estimated 10,000 community gardens within U.S. cities. Photo by Debbie.

Saturday morning yard sale at Jefferson and Higgins
Saturday morning yard sale at--so many interesting finds and I personally love to search out unique treasures. Officials in West Sacramento are considering an ordinance limiting how many garage sales residents can hold. Maybe it is time for the city to sponsor a flea market for our community sellers!
Around the region, ordinances on residential yard sales vary:
• Sacramento has a limit of one per calendar year, not to exceed two consecutive days.
• Sacramento County allows up to three sales per year at the property where the sale operator resides. The sale may not exceed two consecutive days.
• Folsom limits residents to two garage sales a year.
• Citrus Heights limits a parcel to no more than three sales per year, of no more than two consecutive days.
• Rancho Cordova allows three sales a year, of no more than six straight days.
• Elk Grove allows three weekends a year.

Kinder Happy Hippo
Kinder Happy Hippo is a cookie/candy made by Ferrero SpA, the same company that makes Nutella, Kinder Surprise and Tic Tacs, among other candies. Visiting grad student Barbara Gandolfi brough this Happy Hippo treat from Italy where they are all the rage.
Trivia: "Happy Hippo were made famous by a smash-hit commercial where a CGI-animated Hippo sang The Lion Sleeps Tonight while a CGI dog tried to distract it/catch its attention by dancing to the music in increasingly funny and bizarre ways. It has an unusual name for a biscuit, stemming from the character "Happy Hippo" (a cartoon hippopotamus) created by the French designer André Roche for the Ferrero chocolate hit "Kinder Surprise Eggs"."

Theme Day: Our Sister City, Alaminos, Republic of the Philippines.
Jemima Hall provided the above photos that were taken during her trip to visit Alaminos, and the 100 Islands National Park.~ Barbara
On January 15th, 2003, the West Sacramento City Council adopted Resolution 03-2 establishing a Sister City relationship with the city of Alaminos, Republic of the Philippines. This was done in response to the City Council of Alaminos Resolution No. 2002-130, which initiated a request for such a relationship. The relationship was formalized with the signing of a Sister City Agreement which was hand-delivered by West Sacramento City Council Member Mark Montemayor during his trip to the Philippines during late January 2003. One of the elements of the Agreement was to link web pages to inform the citizenry about each other's city.
