Disappearing Relics-Too many to count!

Call me sentimental - I took this photo of the old Quonset Hut on Lisbon Avenue last September, ......when I drove by today it was gone! A chain link fence surrounds the property and a bulldozer was parked there, so it looks like another one of the old unique structures that has helped to make up our town is now a part of our history. See this link for photos of the new church that was constructed on this lot.

Our friends Cathy and Marv say this was once a Russian Church.

Trivia: In 1941 the United States Navy needed an all-purpose, lightweight building that could be shipped anywhere and assembled without skilled labor. Between 150,000-170,000 Quonset Huts were manufactured during WWII. After the war, the U.S. military sold the surplus Quonset huts to the public for $1,000 each.

This is why I like the photo blogs. We get to keep memories of places that are here one day and gone the next. Nice picture.

I use to walk past that everyday when I went to the market there across from the old church.

Ah, yes, those Quonset Huts were everywhere. I was 7 years old in 1941 and have vivid memories of what it was like in SoCal with blackouts and the like. I don't remember being particularly scared...thought everyone lived like that!

Growing up in North Highlands, there were many of these huts around. Rio Linda had quite a few too. Most are gone now. That area grows and grows, everytime I visit it seems that more and more has changed.

Willie's Market was once located in a hut if my memory is correct. The year would been somewhere around 1957-58?
I remember the 10 cent bottled soda with a 3 cent deposit which was waived if you drank it there and penny candy machines. Yes I do remember Willy.
I lived on Vermont St until for about 7 years until 1965.
Before that I lived on Maple St.
Used to watch the El Rancho Drive In cartoons there.
