Hi Everyone,
I would firstly like thank Barbara S for inviting me to share some of my images taken around the West Sacramento area and also to introduce myself. My name is Garry Everett and I have been living in West Sacramento since 2005, relocating here from Houston to start a new job. I am originally from Australia and came to the USA in 1992 again for work. I have a full time job in Davis working in Subsea Robotics which enjoy immensely and is the main reason I have not made photography a full time vocation. With that out of the way the first image I wanted to share with everyone is of the most identifiable landmark in West Sacramento which was taken from the I-Street bridge.

 

The Pioneer Bridge over the Sacramento River

West Sacramento & Sacramento Downtown Riverfront Bridge Alternatives include proposals to widen the existing U.S. 50 Pioneer Bridge across the Sacramento River and build another bridge.

The City of West Sacramento has only three bridges crossing the Sacramento River. These bridges include Pioneer Bridge, Tower Bridge and I Street Bridge. Of these crossings, only one – the Tower Bridge – effectively accommodates pedestrians and bicyclists, in addition to automobiles.

The Tower Bridge Raised for Boat Traffic

This is a shot of the Tower Bridge being raised for a boat traffic on the Sacramento River. You can see the extended bridge platform where the new wider pedestrian lanes were added recently. ~ Debbie

The William Stone Locks Building at the Port of Sacramento

These photos were taken while driving across the Bascule Bridge over the Barge Canal on Jefferson Blvd. in West Sacramento. The bridge was built 1961 and was rehabilitated in 2005. The top photos are the old Locks and bottom photo shows the Palamidessi bridge to the west.

The Stone Lock will soon emerge as a waterfront hot spot. According to reports in the Sacramento Bee, "Scrubby and obscure for years, the 200-acre site lies at a fortuitous point where the Port of Sacramento barge canal meets the Sacramento River.......the city of West Sacramento finalized an exclusive agreement with The Cordish Company to begin planning and designing Stone Lock as its master developer". ~Barbara

Trivia: When we were kids, my dad docked his boat at Miller Park and he would take us through the locks to get to Lake Washington.

New Bicyclist and Pedestrian Bridge Pathway

This new 80-foot-long steel bridge provides a direct connection between Patwin Park and Summerfield Park. The bridge also provides a short, safe route for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling between housing in the Bridgeway Island and Promenade areas, the Southport Town Center and the future high school.

The I Street Bridge Built in 1911

The Historic I Street Bridge is a swing bridge crossing the Sacramento River connecting West Sacramento with Sacramento. I posted the above black and white version because the day I shot the photo, the sky and river basically looked the same color. It seems much more interesting to me now and has the look of an old photo. Below is another version of the I Street Bridge shot the same day posted in color.


On the lower level there are railroad tracks and the upper level is for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Built in 1911, this historic bridge has a vertical clearance of 14 feet 8 inches and was originally part of State Route 16 (California) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.See The History of the I Street Bridge written by Frank Norton.

CDPB Theme Day December 1st: "Bridges": The Tower Bridge

The above photo of the Tower Bridge was taken while it was closed for construction of the expanded pedestrian walkway. Below is an evening shot after the bridge was reopened. The Tower Bridge was built in 1934 is on the list of Historical Sites and Buildings in West Sacramento.

"The original M Street Bridge (Tower Bridge) was built by the Sacramento Northern Electric Railroad in 1911 and linked the cities of Washington (West Sacramento) and Sacramento. It carried electric railcars (similar to the present Light-rail) loaded with passengers and freight." See the Tower Bridge History for more information.
