The landscapers were hard at work today at the new Joseph (Joey) Lopes Neighborhood Park on Sycamore Avenue in West Sacramento. The crew was busy digging and planting "millions" of beautiful drought tolerant shrubs, plants and trees and said they expect to lay the bark tomorrow. The huge park design is really quite fabulous with an art installation yet to come by nationally known artist Michael Clapper of Denver, Colorado. I'm sure it would please our old friend Joey Lopes!

The new playground structure at located at 2950 Linden Road is now complete and it looks great! The park remodel was designed by Miracle Play Systems and was partially funded with donations raised by Bridgeway Play, a citizens group in West Sacramento.

Thanks to generous grant from KaBOOM!! and Disney, YCCA, the City of West Sacramento, Northern California Construction Training, Inc. and over 400 community volunteers teamed up to build a new playground at Bryte Park in West Sacramento yesterday. Many thanks to Raley's Market for donating breakfast and lunch for the workers. There was a great turnout today for the 3rd Annual Soggy Doggy Swim Day at the West Sacramento Recreation Center. Swimming was limited to dogs only, but many humans joined in to wade ankle deep with their pets.
R.I.P Allen Cadero 1951-2012. Many folks are remembering the good times they had with Allen Cadero and the "Merry Band of Misfits"...a bunch of kids who graduated from James Marshall High School in West Sacramento. Allen was an active citizen in our community and served on many local boards and committees including the West Sacramento Parks and Community Services Commission, West Sacramento Historical Society, The West Sacramento Arts Guild, and the Special Olympics. Allen was named Citizen of the Year by the California Parks and Recreation Society in 1994 for his extensive involvement in the community. Allen, the entrepreneur, had successful business partnerships in the Sacramento Valley and opened Cloth Country on Jefferson Boulevard, moving it to the Merkley Ave location then to Old Sacramento. Family and friends will be gathering for a private memorial.

R.I.P. Rusty Mendez. Rusty was a graduate of Washington High School and was an outspoken activist for her community. She served several terms on the City of West Sacramento Parks and Recreation Commission and her leadership was instrumental to many successful park projects. She will be remembered with love by her family and many many friends.

Summer in West Sac
One of the great things we love about our town are the outdoor events our Parks and Recreation Department sponsors for the citizens. Mark your calendars for some great music this summer at the Harmony on the River Concerts at the River Walk Park. The first concert is this Tuesday, July 6th!

The first days of summer and we are into the 100+ degree temperatures. Our kids look forward to a cool down at the SprayGround at the Bridgeway Lakes Community Park in West Sacramento. The water-park is open daily May through October and is free to the public.
