Watching the ship go by

Driving along Jefferson Boulevard toward Clarksburg can be quite an adventure.  Yesterday we saw this ship from Singapore cruising up river to the Port of West Sacramento.

Barge Canal Access

We stopped to enjoy the peaceful and scenic beauty of the barge canal access on Jefferson Boulevard this afternoon...no sign of any fishermen there today.  The Fish Sniffer says "(Sacramento) Angling pressure has been light in the Sacramento area since the New Year began, with the Port of Sacramento and Sacramento Deepwater Channel offering the top striped bass fishing and the Lower Delta offering the best sturgeon action."

New signage at the Port of West Sacramento "SSA Marine"

SSA Marine (Stevedoring Services of America) The Sacramento-Yolo Port Commission approved a new master lease of its West Sacramento maritime facilities with SSA Pacific, Inc.

"In West Sacramento, SSA Marine handles a variety of bulk, breakbulk and project cargo, including: rice, fertililzer, lumber, cement, minerals/ore, metals, wind turbines, machinery, generators, steel and heavy lifts."

Port of West Sacramento's New Signage

The previous sign said "Port of Sacramento". The new sign proudly announces the correct location of the Port property which is in West Sacramento.

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien at the Port of Sacramento

Thank you Amy Cameron for sending this great photo of The Jeremiah O’Brien docked at the Port in West Sacramento. The SS. Jeremiah O'Brien is one of the two remaining fully functional Liberty Ships of the 2,710 built and launched during WWII. The vessel is here as part of the California Emergency Management Agency’s Golden Guardian Exercise. Emergency Responders from throughout the Sacramento region were at the Port yesterday to participate in various training exercises.

Rowing Races at the Port of Sacramento

The William Stone Locks Building at the Port of Sacramento

These photos were taken while driving across the Bascule Bridge over the Barge Canal on Jefferson Blvd. in West Sacramento. The bridge was built 1961 and was rehabilitated in 2005. The top photos are the old Locks and bottom photo shows the Palamidessi bridge to the west.

The Stone Lock will soon emerge as a waterfront hot spot. According to reports in the Sacramento Bee, "Scrubby and obscure for years, the 200-acre site lies at a fortuitous point where the Port of Sacramento barge canal meets the Sacramento River.......the city of West Sacramento finalized an exclusive agreement with The Cordish Company to begin planning and designing Stone Lock as its master developer". ~Barbara

Trivia: When we were kids, my dad docked his boat at Miller Park and he would take us through the locks to get to Lake Washington.

Barge Canal Access Now Open

These fishermen were enjoying the beautiful weather the day after Thanksgiving. The Barge Canal Access recreational area on Jefferson Boulevard is now open and offers a boat launch for non-motorized boats, bank fishing, picnic area and walking path for bird and people watching.

Brusco Tug Boats and Barges

Trivia: A tug is a boat used to maneuver, primarily by towing or pushing, other vessels in harbours, over the open sea or through rivers and canals. They are also used to tow barges, disabled ships, or other equipment like towboats. Tugboats are quite strong for their size. Early tugboats had steam engines but today diesel engines are used.
