This mosaic in the Holy Cross Parish Hall was made by the Holy Cross School 8th grade class in 1970. The project was completed under the supervision of Sister M. Colette.

Holy Cross Church 56th Annual Parish Festival

The Miktlantekuhtl Danza Azteka performed at the 2 day Holy Cross Parish Festival last weekend. The food and the music was great especially Jessie's Famous Taco's...Jessie (on the left) and her Taco Crew are in photo below.

60,000 Christmas Lights at Trinity Presbyterian Church

Trinity Presbyterian Church on Park Boulevard in West Sacramento has 60,000 Christmas Lights on every night until January 6th, 2009. Tune your car radio into 88.7 FM and you will see a synchronized ballet of lights dancing to the beat of the Christmas Carols playing.

Trivia: Reverend Archie Marston was the minister at Trinity Presbyterian for many years. He performed the wedding ceremony when our mom, Shirley married our step-dad Ralph Marston (no relation to Rev. Marston). Several years later he was the minister at my stepbrother and sister in law Beverly and Charles Marston's wedding, and my sister and brother in law, Kathye and Chuck Blessing's wedding. ~Barbara

Holy Cross Parish (est. 1913)

Holy Cross Parish and School, 800 Todhunter Ave. in West Sacramento. Holy Cross School was established in 1957 and has been staffed by Sisters of Mercy throughout its history. The School offers Grades K-8, Extended care, Athletics, Band, Baton, Cheerleading, Counseling, Tutoring, Hot lunch Program and Weekly Schoolwide Mass.

Holy Myrrhbearing Women Church

This Russian Orthodox Church on Water Street in Bryte was founded in 1925. Women played a major role in the building of the Church--they were not only involved with fundraising, but also the actual construction of the building; hence the name Holy Myrrbearing Women Church to honor these women. All services are generally served in Slavonic. The church choir generally sings in Slavonic and uses various chants during the worship service. Dates of Feasts are according to the Julian Calendar.

The church is on the list of Historical Sites and Buildings in West Sacramento.

São Pedro Association Festa

The São Pedro Association is a Madeiran heritage association founded in 1922 and is focused on retaining its historical identity in our community. The annual festival is held at the San Pedro Park on Hobson Avenue in Bryte and is not only an Madeiran event, it is considered by the townsfolk as a community event. Photos by Jack Schwab.

The original association grounds were on the banks of the Sacramento River in the township of Riverbank. In the 20s, the festa was called the Riverbank Festa after the name of the area, which was later renamed to Bryte.

The Church and Park are on the list of Historical Sites and Buildings in West Sacramento.

New Slavic Church in West Sacramento

The newly constructed "House of Prayer" Evangelical Baptist Church is the place of worship for many of the Slavic community in West Sacramento. "The Sacramento River flows past the township of Bryte where many of the early Russians who came to California's capitol city settled almost 100 years ago . Russian refuge: religion, migration, and settlement on the North American ...By Susan Wiley Hardwick - In 1987, when victims of religious persecution were finally allowed to leave Russia, a flood of immigrants landed on the Pacific shores of North America. By the end of 1992 over 200,000 Jews and Christians had left their homeland to resettle in a land where they had only recently been considered "the enemy." Russian Refuge is a comprehensive account of the Russian immigrant experience in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia since the first settlements over two hundred years ago. Susan Hardwick focuses on six little-studied Christian groups--Baptists, Pentecostals, Molokans, Doukhobors, Old Believers, and Orthodox believers--to study the role of religion in their decisions to emigrate and in their adjustment to American culture. Hardwick deftly combines ethnography and cultural geography, presenting narratives and other data collected in over 260 personal interviews with recent immigrants and their family members still in Russia.
