West Sacramento Launches Major Levee Project

Congresswoman Doris Matsui and West Sacramento’s Mayor Christopher Cabaldon, along with flood protection partners, broke ground on the Southport Levee Improvement Project today, Tuesday, May 9 with more than 75 people in attendance. The Southport Levee Improvement Project is West Sacramento’s largest levee project to date. It will improve nearly six miles of vulnerable levee along the Sacramento River in Southport. It is one of four significant West Sacramento levee projects initiated in the past ten years. “The Southport project represents the first levee improvement initiative to meet both federal and state requirements in the post Katrina era,” said West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon. “The levee will provide a 200-year level of protection consistent with the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan. This benefits not only the citizens and businesses of West Sacramento, but also provides significant habitat and recreational opportunities for the entire region.” West Sacramento is approved for $1.2 billion in federal funding for flood protection projects as part of the 2016 Water Resources Development Act thanks to the tireless effort of Congresswoman Doris Matsui and project partners. The Southport project is the first step in addressing the remaining levee deficiencies in West Sacramento. Project partners including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Central Valley Flood Protection Board and California Department of Water Resources spoke about the significance of the Southport Project and the benefits contained in the federal WRDA bill. About West Sac Flood Protect diligently works to improve 52 miles of levees that protect West Sacramento. Created in 1994, West Sac Flood Protect coordinates, funds and constructs major flood risk reduction projects and spearheads West Sacramento-area flood risk reduction efforts.

Village Parkway Extension

Construction has started the a 0.4 mile roadway extension of Village Parkway across from the new Mike McGowan Bridge in Southport.  For more info see New West Sacramento Parkway Will Connect Southport To Raley Field And Tower Bridge

Finishing touches on the Mike McGowan Bridge

The Mike McGowan Bridge will be 615 feet long and approximately 80 feet wide and is expected to be completed by end of 2014.  Linking South River Road across the Barge Canal, our new bridge will help alleviate traffic on Jefferson Boulevard, adding a third connection between the north and south sides of town.

New Tenants coming to Westbridge Plaza

Westbridge Plaza was completed in 2008 and it is great to see new construction activity this month.  We talked to Ron Meade, President of RC Pacific Construction at the site today and his crew is working on the improvements for several new tenants in the center including a bank, Allstate Insurance Office, a sports store, Great Clips and more. Great news for West Sacramento!

Bridge District Water Storage Facility and Park Project

The Bridge District Water Storage Facility and Park Project on Ballpark Drive adjacent to the Ironworks subdivision is nearing completion. The contractor is scheduled to have the 3 million gallon water reservoir / pump station on-line by January 2013 and completing the park, including amenities, by the end of summer 2013.

Construction continues at the Duck Pond

The workers were there again today to finish the walkway project at the Duck Pond on Linden Avenue. The foreman said the project was temporarily stopped until the City approved their plan. During the shutdown some of their materials were stolen including many of the bricks being used to build the new retaining wall. The estimated time of completion will about 2 weeks from now. Let's hope the thieves will stay away from the materials and equipment during this time.

RWQCB Erosion Control

These vacant lots on Quail are waiting for construction to begin on new homes..in the meantime the Regional Water Quality Control Board requires the contractor to provide for effective drainage of storm water to prevent erosion and sediment run off into the gutters.

Bridge District Infrastructure Project--ETA Fall 2011

The top photo was shot while driving over the Pioneer Bridge and lower photos were shot from the corner of S. River Road and Riske Lane. The Bridge District Infrastructure project includes "new roadway segments and supporting utilities - sewer(Pump Station Project), water, storm drainage, and commercial utilities - for the area bounded by Tower Bridge Gateway to the north and northwest, US50/Business 80 to the south and southwest, and the Sacramento River to the east."

Construction on Harbor Boulevard

The traffic slowdown at the Harbor Boulevard Interchange expansion project can be challenging for those traveling that area during commute hours...best to try an alternate route until completion.

Retail Corner at Lake Washington & Jefferson

This new retail building is located on the North East Corner of Lake Washington & Jefferson Blvd's. Since I shot this photo a Papa Murphy's Pizza has started construction in the center space. The approximately 12,000 square feet project is being developed by Taylor Properties.

Lower Northwest Interceptor-West Sacramento Force Main

The West Sacramento Force Main (WSFM) crosses the northern portion of the City of West Sacramento and consists of two 60-inch diameter pipes. The WSFM connects the Northern Sacramento River Crossing to the West Sacramento Transition Structure located near Linden Road. The Lower Northwest Interceptor route begins in Natomas and continues through the City of West Sacramento, through rural Yolo County and ends in Sacramento County at the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (SRWTP) in Elk Grove.

Jefferson Boulevard Road Construction

This road construction crew is working on the Jefferson Boulevard updates to accommodate traffic from the new high school opening this fall.

Garden Street Project and the Ironworks Lofts

"The road work on the intersection of Tower Bridge Gateway and Garden Street is now complete. The former overpass to Riske Lane from West Capitol Avenue has been removed. This construction is important to the redevelopment of the Triangle area, and provides access to the new Ironworks Lofts." (See below)
