While walking through our local Walmart last week this message was caught in the corner of my eye.. The Dr. Pepper marketer did a great job on this one!

New Sign for Capitol Bowl

New signage for the Capitol Bowl on West Capitol Avenue.

Trivia: The bottom photo is the sign that we grew up seeing when driving down West Capitol Avenue when it was known as The El Rancho Bowl. In those days the Capitol Bowl was located in downtown Sacramento.

Gas-Better Off to Pay Cash

At Rick's Beacon Gas Station on Jefferson Boulevard the price of gas is 10 cents a gallon more if you charge it! ~Barbara

Dead Cat Alley

On May 7, 1962, the Woodland City Council officially named the alley "Dead Cat Alley", but the true origin of the name is still unknown. ~ Barbara

Trivia: The site of Old China Town is on Dead Cat Alley as well as the Chicago Cafe, one of Yolo City's (as Woodland was known in 1853) oldest businesses. For more information about this historical landmark that runs through the downtown section of Woodland, CA see the Dead Cat Alley: History.

Eppies Sign in West Sacramento

The Eppies Restaurant on West Capitol Avenue at one time was part of a chain of restaurants owned by Eppie Johnson of Sacramento. Eppie's Great Race, the World's Oldest Triathlon was first formed in 1974.~ Barbara

Trivia: "According to SacBee.com, Eppie Johnson and his nephew Richard Bruce are reviving the New Horseshoe Bar Grill in Loomis, scheduled to open by early June. This will be Johnson's first restaurant venture since selling off his Eppie's chain of coffee shops a decade ago."

The Denny's Landmark Sign--Now Gone

The sign for Denny's and Subway on Lake Washington Boulevard is now gone...West Sacramento's sign ordinance takes effect May 1, 2008, so I guess this one was removed because of it exceeds the height restrictions.

"Cheers" on West Capitol Avenue

Cheers on West Capitol Avenue. What a great sign-! Update: This sign is now gone
due to the new sign ordinance in West Sacramento...

Years ago we would all go to Cheers to throw darts some Saturday nights..Bonnie won the Cheers chili cookoff one year...but our old crowd is pretty much retired from the nightlife on West Capitol Avenue now....(Those were the days! Mary Hopkin 1968)

La Estrellita Taqueria and Mexican Market

Located on Sacramento Avenue-this market has a great selection of Mexican American food stuff. I really like the colorful painted sign.~Barbara

Hefty Burger on West Capitol Avenue

According to one local account "Hefty's been around for quite a while now; it used to be a Pioneer Chicken - that's why the sign looks a little weird, as their logo was a "chuck wagon-in flames" of some sort." This sign will probably be gone soon as the City of West Sacramento continues to enforce the new sign ordinance. Photo by Barbara

Broderick Boat Ramp in West Sacramento

The Broderick Boat Ramp on 4th Street is a great launching facility for access to the Sacramento River. It is free to the public and open from dawn to dusk. The sign posted looks like a vandal tried to set it on fire.

Uno Mas Cerveza -Corona at Puerto Azul Restaurant

I love the Corona Beer sign at the Puerto Azul Restaurant on West Capitol Avenue. It is also rumored that I usually enjoy a couple of them with the great seafood cocktails that Vince makes!

Trivia: The Puerto Azul (now closed) was located in the same building that at one time housed the infamous "Yolo Club" on West Capitol Avenue (endearingly known as "The Strip" in the old days). They served the greatest BBQ ribs in town. There was a rotisserie in the front window to show off the delicious ribs and chicken cooking, and there was a rotating circular bar in the center of the restaurant. My dad used to take us there for dinner when we were kids, then would disappear down the street for a quick one at the Hawaiian Hut to visit the Stathos Brothers who owned that Hut.

The Capitol Bowl "aka" El Rancho Bowl

These are just some of my memories of the old days at the El Rancho Bowling Alley..The El Rancho Bowl at 900 West Capitol Avenue was one of West Sacramento's best hangouts in the 1960's and 70's. It was home to the Nisei Leagues and the manager was Toko Fuji, the head mechanic was Shig Imura, Joe Bonomo ran the kitchen, Leroy Klink tended the bar in the 300 Room, Virgil Yee was at the front desk, my mom Shirley was the league coordinator and my sister Kathye and I worked in the Kiddie Corral.

I remember watching my stepdad Ralph Marston and Joe Sheldon "pot bowl" all night long and seeing many 300 games during that time. My stepbrother Charlie and his buddies all bowled on the traveling team and their team was always the league champs.

We used to go Blue Chip Stamp bowling on Saturday nights and sometimes would fill 10 books in one night...My sister in law Bev bowled one of her all time highest games in our couples league the night before her first daughter Shelley was born. My brother Howard remembers taking a quarter and playing the pinball machine and building it up to 18 games then selling the games to one of the porters on duty.

More recently, our daughter's put on a 50's style "Family Bowlarama" there about 7 years ago that was attended by about 35 members of our extended family and it was very memorable for all. In 2006, my grandson Jack had his 4th birthday party at the Capitol Bowl....Photos by Barbara
