The Sacramento Weir

Above is a close look at the gates of the Sacramento Weir just north of West Sacramento on the River Road. The weir gates are opened to divert water into the Yolo Bypass once the Sacramento River hits the 27.5 foot stage at the  I Street Bridge.

Kiesel Crossing and Pump Building

Returning to West Sacramento from Woodland on the Old River Road we crossed the
tracks at the Kiesel Crossing. Just before the tracks sits this old pump building.

Leonidas Taylor Monument on the River Road

"Erected to the memory of Leonidas Taylor, born in the City of Philadelphia on the 3rd of July, 1832. He grew to manhood in the City of Saint Louis and was killed by explosion of the steamer Belle opposite this spot on the 5th of February, 1856. His body was never found".

VFW Hall in Bryte

According to Ronald J. Ramos, the VFW Hall in Bryte was built by Jordan "Pappy" Ramos originally as the Bryte Theater. It showed one movie, The King and the Egg and closed then sold to the VFW as a meeting place for all of the many WWII veterans who lived in Bryte. A monument to Pappy is in the front at the entrance. Historic Bertagna's Standard Station: 1934

Located on the curve on C Street just just around the bend from the Senator Garage in Broderick is the old Bertagna's Standard Station building . (Listed on the Historic Sites and Buildings of West Sacramento as built in 1934.) Years ago there was a tattoo parlor there.

"The Alkali"

Alkali Flat (named for the crusted alkali deposits left in vernal pools after seasonal flooding) is the oldest remaining neighborhood in Sacramento. The neighborhood was born in 1852 after the great fire of Sacramento. For more info on the Alkali Flat Neighborhood see http://www.saclibrary.org/?pageId=1130

Sacramento River Historical Marker

One of our earliest accounts of the Sacramento River is from Spanish sea captain Gabriel Moraga, who sailed up the river in 1808. This Sacramento River Exploration Plaque is mounted on the Tony's Place Restaurant building that sits at the intersection of Market and Bridge Streets in Walnut Grove.

A closeup shot of our wonderful old I Street Bridge...The 3,150 ton swing span is the heaviest in the United States and was the heaviest in the world when the bridge was built in 1911. The upper deck of the bridge carries automobiles and the lower deck carries trains.

The Beautiful Memorial Auditorium

Thank you David Kamminga for sharing the great shots of the Memorial Auditorium. The auditorium was constructed in 1926 and was originally dedicated to solders who died during WWI. Grampa Frank's brother Almer Norton's name is etched on one of the original Memorial stones.
Trivia: The Beach Boys Live In Sacramento, 1964 Second Show! album was recorded on location at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California on August 1, 1964. We saw the Broadway Production of Hair at the Auditorium in the early 70's.

Crest Theater Sign

They are redoing the sign at the Crest Theater in Sacramento.

El Rancho Mobile Home Park

The El Rancho Mobile Home Park is located at the site of the old El Rancho Drive-in Movie Theater (1 screen and held 780 cars). Photos of the old signage can be seen on Flickr by Tom Spalding.

New Barber Shop on 15th Street

A new Barber Shop is now open in the old West Sacramento Cleaners Building on Fifteenth Street. Photo by Debbie

According to a West Sacramento Historical Society publication, the West Sacramento Cleaners Building on the corner of Fifteenth Street and Virgina Avenue was built in 1946 by Hubert and Grace Beers. Mrs. Beers sold the building in 1971. At one time there was also a restaurant on one side of the building.

Over the years it has housed Sam Young Studios, Blanche's Flowers and Gifts and several other types of business residences. View a photo of this building last March.~ Barbara

The Old Bridge View Market and apartment Building on Third Street in Broderick dates back to 1930 and is on the list of West Sacramento Historical Sites and Buildings. The West Sacramento Historical Society and Museum is also located in that building.

California State Capitol Turns Pink for the Cure!

"At a symbolic pink lighting of the State Capitol building on January 17, California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, Assemblywoman Patty Berg and Assemblyman Roger Niello voiced support for closing the healthcare gaps that cause breast cancer to be deadlier for low-income women, minorities and the uninsured."

"The event marked the 18th stop of the Komen Community Challenge, a campaign to elevate breast cancer on the national agenda and draw attention to disparities in breast cancer mortality for women with little or no health care."

This old building has had many business tenants over the years. I remember when there was a tattoo parlor there. Christy said she would love to have her office there. Let me know if you have anything to add to this post.

The I Street Bridge Built in 1911

The Historic I Street Bridge is a swing bridge crossing the Sacramento River connecting West Sacramento with Sacramento. I posted the above black and white version because the day I shot the photo, the sky and river basically looked the same color. It seems much more interesting to me now and has the look of an old photo. Below is another version of the I Street Bridge shot the same day posted in color.


On the lower level there are railroad tracks and the upper level is for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Built in 1911, this historic bridge has a vertical clearance of 14 feet 8 inches and was originally part of State Route 16 (California) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.See The History of the I Street Bridge written by Frank Norton.

CDPB Theme Day December 1st: "Bridges": The Tower Bridge

The above photo of the Tower Bridge was taken while it was closed for construction of the expanded pedestrian walkway. Below is an evening shot after the bridge was reopened. The Tower Bridge was built in 1934 is on the list of Historical Sites and Buildings in West Sacramento.

"The original M Street Bridge (Tower Bridge) was built by the Sacramento Northern Electric Railroad in 1911 and linked the cities of Washington (West Sacramento) and Sacramento. It carried electric railcars (similar to the present Light-rail) loaded with passengers and freight." See the Tower Bridge History for more information.

The Bryte Post Office

The Bryte Post Office on Lisbon Avenue was established in 1915. The town of Bryte was named after Mike Bryte, a well-known dairy farmer in the area. Photo by Barbara

In the 1980s I was friends with Pearl Reese Loutensock, retired Postmaster with the Bryte Post Office. She was a very colorful local personality who was active in the Soroptimist Club of West Sacramento.
